Website Contrary Capital
From Netscape to Snapchat, many of each generation’s defining companies are started at universities.
But over the past decade, as the cost of starting a business plummeted and technology became ever-present around us, the number of young people starting companies began to explode.
That’s why, in 2016, we started Contrary, to foster the university entrepreneurship that was transforming campuses across the country.
A year later, we raised our inaugural fund backed by founding members of Facebook, Tesla, Reddit, and many other top tech entrepreneurs.
But most importantly, we built a team of ~100 student Venture Partners (VPs) at nearly every major research university across America. We are founders, engineers, designers, hustlers, researchers, writers, and everything in between.
Contrary’s also a bit different than the rest. We’re building a world-class, returns-focused venture fund backed by institutional limited partners. We’re investing meaningful amounts of capital ($50K — $200K+), and work with a small number of the top university founders to help them scale their visions: students of any kind, faculty, and recent grads/dropouts.
In our first year actively investing, we:
- Had 3,000+ meetings with builders across the country
- Made 14 investments across 11 schools
- Held our inaugural summer program
- Hosted Demo Day 2018
- Built out scores of internal tools to support our founders
This year, to double down on our mission of democratizing access to both talent and capital everywhere, we’re excited to share that we’re launching an open recruiting effort to bring on new students to the Contrary team across investing, marketing, engineering, and design!
There’s no archetype of what we’re looking for. One of the most valuable parts of the Contrary network is our incredible diversity across all dimensions, and we’re committed to developing that even further.
So, if you’re a current student (undergrad or graduate) interested in joining the team, below are the roles that we’re looking for. Choose the one that’s most interesting to you to learn more about the day-to-day:
All applications will be due on September 27th. Feel free to reach out to email@example.com with any questions!
We’re really excited to hear from you, and hope you’ll join us in building the platform for all things university entrepreneurship!
